Background: In preparation for their upcoming Spring Offensive against Finland, the Soviet Navy
had built a new air base on the island of Seiskari in the Baltic Sea. Red Banner Fleet Yak-7s of 13
KIAP (Naval Interceptor Air Regiment) and a mix of LaGG-3s and La-5s of the 4th Guards IAP
occupied the airfield in May and commenced standing patrols. On the 20th of May they were
engaged by flights of LeLv 24 Brewster fighters in numerous small skirmishes through-out the day
that resulted in the loss of three Yaks and two LaGGs for no loss to the elderly Brewsters. The
Brewsters, which had been in action since 1940, were considered out-classed by these newer
Russian fighters. However, the superior quality of the Finnish pilots helped them maintain an
edge against the Soviets. This scenario depicts the start of a typical skirmish with the Brewsters
diving in on a patrol of low flying Soviets.
