Maneuvering to keep Wildcat #1 in view and out of phase, Zero #1 pulls from
a shallow dive to a shallow climb rolling inverted and turning to the
Northwest. Wildcat #1 pulls out of his steep dive turning and shooting at
Zero #1 from 600 yards out. His tracers fall below and behind the Zero. In
the distance Wildcat #2 works to catch up to his lead. Over the Wildcat
radio they hear the recall order to get back on station as the bombers are
still incoming.

Zero #2 got off a good shot and just plain wiffed, and right after that the F4#1 got Zero#2's, and instead of presenting a very good target Zero#2 made a bad mistake that the Wildcat did not let slip and presented a great target to which the Wildcat Nailed and lit Zero#2 up. So come time to flee... situation was very, very doubtful. Zero#2 was gonna have to offer up good shots, hope the Wildcat closed in, then turn Zero#2's tail to break The tail and hope to win the init. Neither happened. For some reason, not sure why, the Wildcat never did raise that nose up slightly and take the fair enough shots offered even when the Zero#2 was LVL. And when Zero#2 did make his move for the init the Zero failed the init. So Zero#2 made a hard overstressing turn in and gunned the shot up airframe out just barely making it. Heart pounding stuff.
